“Together, ordinary people can do extraordinary things.” - Barack Obama
One Tuesday, I attended an event where I had the opportunity to listen to a group of ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things and determined to make meaningful change for all of us, right here at the local level.
The Extraordinary People Running for Local Office
The candidates who spoke were ordinary people, just like us, people who see things in their communities that they believe can be better and decided they could no longer simply stand by and do nothing.
What stood out was their determination: the desire, ambition, and willingness to step forward and run for office, knowing that it takes courage and hard work to put yourself out there and ask your community for its trust.
They aren’t waiting for someone else to make the changes they want to see. They’re choosing to get involved. They’re choosing to serve. They’re choosing to try.
Their campaigns are an example of what civic engagement can look like when ordinary people decide that their voices belong in the process and that their communities deserve to be represented.
Our Extraordinary Candidates Need our Help
Join us for our Rock the Vote Rally on September 25, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Shadle Park Library. The library is located at 2111 W. Wellesley Ave. in Spokane.
When We Have the Power Movement puts on an event… WE MAKE IT A PARTY!
We’re bringing the music, food, fun, and community spirit and putting all that energy toward making a difference!
DJ? We’ve got one.
Food? Absolutely.
Fun? You know it!
People coming together to make their voices heard? That’s what we’re all about.
Come join us as we turn civic engagement into a celebration!
We’ll be Phone banking for candidates
Writing postcards encouraging our community to vote
Painting “VOTE” rocks to spread the word throughout our neighborhoods
Making buttons to show support for the candidates we’re working to elect
You don’t need to be an expert. You don’t need to know everything. Just show up, bring your energy, and do what you can. Bring a friend, meet your neighbors, turn up the music, and help make democracy something we actively participate in, not something we watch from the sidelines.
There is no need to RSVP, but if you want to get on the volunteer list for a specific task, or help out on a different date, please send an email to: mailto:outreach.WHTP@gmail.com
Can’t make Friday, September 25?
We’ve got two more opportunities to join the fun:
Friday, October 9 | 12:30–3:30 PM -Spokane Valley Library
Friday, October 23 | 9:30 AM–1:30 PM The Hive
Come for the party. Stay for the purpose. Leave knowing you did something.
We have the energy, now we need a little fuel.
Putting democracy into action takes more than enthusiasm—it takes stamps, paper, ink, buttons, paint, food, and a whole lot of coffee!
We’re bringing people together to phone bank, write postcards, paint “VOTE” rocks, make buttons, and encourage our neighbors to participate in our elections. We want everyone who walks through the door to have what they need to jump in and get involved.
So, we’re asking our community to chip in and help us cover the supplies.
$10 can help with postcards and stamps.
$25 can help with printing and supplies.
$50 can help stock our art and button-making tables.
$100 can help feed volunteers and keep the party going.
Give a little. Give what you can. Every contribution helps turn a room full of people into a room full of action.
And if you can’t give money, that’s okay! Give your time. Bring a friend. Write a postcard. Make a button. Make a phone call.

Let’s put people back into “We the People”
It will take all of us.
We are not powerless. History shows us what ordinary people can accomplish when they come together with purpose, courage, persistence, and hope.
